In-Home Care Through the Stages of ALS
Early Stages: At this stage, muscles may be weak and soft, or they may be tight, spastic, and stiff. Cramping and twitching occur as well as muscle atrophy. Symptoms vary from person to person. Symptoms include fatigue, compromised equilibrium, slurred speech, and a weak grip. Care at this stage is focused on emotional support and helping patients and their families understand the disease and what to expect moving forward.
Middle Stages: During this stage, patients will experience more widespread symptoms and may suffer from weak or paralyzed muscles. At this stage, patients may start to need more assistance with personal care and everyday activities to ensure safety while still maintaining dignity and quality of life.
Late Stages: Once a patient reaches this stage mobility is very limited, and help is needed 24/7 for most personal needs such as poor respiration and symptoms of fatigue continues to increase.
End Stage: At this stage, the focus is on providing comfort and maintaining quality of life by supporting physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient and providing support for their family members.
